Good morning and welcome to our very first episode of the community connection. I am so blessed to have you with me. I’m your host pastor Josh Smith. You’re welcome to just call me Josh. However you may have found me, I hope you will subscribe to the podcast and join me as we form a family of believers growing in the word of God and partaking in communion together. Now, if you’re like me and listen to the bulk of your podcasts while driving, I understand that you may not be able to take the elements. However, if you’re at home or in a group, feel free to grab your bread and juice and let’s make a community connection.
Well here we are at the starting line. I don’t know if you’ve ever trained for a race, but it takes a lot of work to even make it to the starting line and that’s kind of how I feel with this podcast. I’ve put in a lot of research time and discovery to get to the point we are now just to get to the start. So hopefully we will run this race well together. As I host, we communicate and create there to be community of believers taking communion together. So who is this podcast for? Who am I trying to reach? Well anyone who’s a believer, I would love to see have communion with us. I also, my heart really goes out to shut ins. In my regular work I work with a lot of people who are shut in. Their health doesn’t allow them to make it to church anymore. If this podcast could somehow find it into their home, that would be truly a blessing. They might get a chance to take the bread, take drink, celebrate what Jesus has done for them.
Another person I think of is people in other countries. You know, here in America we truly are a blessed people and we can walk into any church we like, worship freely and celebrate communion together, but that’s not the case in every country. Some places it’s illegal to gather. Other places it’s very dangerous and it could very well cost them their life. So if this somehow made it to their ears and they were able to celebrate communion with us to celebrate Jesus, what a joy that would be. The last group of people I think about are those who have just become disillusioned with the church, they are home, they’ve been hurt, wounded, and for now they’re just not entering into fellowship. Of course, my prayer for them is that one day they will come back and join us in fellowship. Until that time I still would love for them to take bread, take juice, and contemplate what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us.
Another very common question is who is able to do this? Who’s qualified? There are so many different ways that communion is taken. In some churches it’s a requirement that they be a member, in other churches they have, different beliefs such as that the elements and the juice, it actually turns into the physical body of Christ. The only rule that we have here, the only real guideline I’ll say is that you’re a believer in Jesus Christ. That you have believed in your heart and confessed with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord. That is simply our one and only rule. That is the one thing that allows us to celebrate. No religious differences should keep us apart, no age, no gender, no denominational affiliations even, that’s the one requirement, do you know Jesus? Do you profess? If you do, then I’d love to welcome you to take communion with us. I’m going to read from first Corinthians 11 and you’ll begin to hear this verse week by week.
Although I’ll talk about many different topics in the lead up when we actually take communion. This is our common text. First Corinthians 11 verse 23 it says for I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night, which he was betrayed, took bread. When He had given thanks, He broke it and said, this is my Body which is for you, do this in remembrance of me. Oh, Father we thank you that from the beginning of time from the foundation you had a plan to redeem mankind. Lord, you didn’t let Adam sin and just throw your hands up in the air and say all is lost. You had a plan, and that plan was Jesus and you knew that you would send Him to the earth to have his body broken so that we could be restored and we would one day again coming to fellowship just like we did in the garden. Thank you Jesus. Let’s take the bread together.
In the same way he took the cup also after supper saying this cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of Me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. Lord Jesus. I’m so grateful that you poured out your blood for us, just like it says in the book of Isaiah. Even though our sins, were red as scarlet, you made them white as snow. Lord, you bought our cleansing through the blood you spilled on the cross. Jesus for the joy set before you, which was the restoration of relationship with us. You endured the pain, you suffered and now we have the benefit of being restored and living in right relationship with you. We thank you Jesus. Let’s take the cup. All right. It’s just that simple. We’ve had communion together. We’ve celebrated.
I wanted to tell you about someone very special to me. Her name is Erin. She is running SunshineJuice. If anyone doesn’t know her she is the daughter of our beloved pastor Rod Murray. She has started this place that makes organic juice drinks. And let me tell you, they are fabulous. I was just in the other day and I had a super hero, it was apple, carrot, cranberry, and ginger. And that had me ready to go, either that or else it was the wheat grass shot that I had as well. Yeah, it tasted a little grassy, but hey? I was pumped up for several hours afterwards. She’s got a couple locations. She’s really been working hard and growing this business and I sure would love it if you guys would stop in and see her. Just tell her Josh sent you, that you heard about it on communionconnection. She has one place at 6225 East Virginia, just right off Burkhart. The other one is at 2017 West Franklin street. Our very own Arielle from Wellspring is managing that location. Let me tell you, Erin is not paying me anything to run ads for her. I simply wanted to tell you about it because not only did I love Rod, but I love his whole family, Lisa and Erin and Ryan and Arielle. Even the time I got to spend with Britney and Landon as well. Just love that whole family. So anything I can do to be a blessing to them, I would ask that you would join me. I know I’m going to be going in next week and getting myself a chunky monkey. Almond milk, bananas, peanut butter and cocoa. That sounds like something right up my alley. Hey, if you’ve liked spending time with us and look forward to more teaching on what communion is, where we find it in the Bible and how and why we do it, as well as some interviews I’m going to be having, with pastors from the area and even some missionaries as I get the opportunity. Could you do me a favor and like this podcast, downloaded and subscribe. It’ll be available on our website very soon. And before you know, it will be an iTunes and some of the other providers as well. Hey, I’ve been truly blessed to be with you and I’m looking forward to what happens with us as a group week after week. Feel free to leave me comments. I’d be happy to answer any questions and take some time to personally connect. Hey, this has been Josh. We just made a communion connection. Please join us at www.thecommunionconnection.com
